Steven R. Flier, M.D., FACP

Patient Pictures 103Steven R. Flier M.D. is a founder and partner of Personal Physicians HealthCare.  He has been practicing internal medicine in the Boston area since 1979.

A graduate of City College of New York  (Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude) in 1970, Flier received his M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine with highest honors in 1975. He was awarded the Upjohn Achievement Award as the outstanding graduate in his class and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. His internship and residency in internal medicine, and Fellowship in nephrology were all done at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine with lifetime certifications in both internal medicine and nephrology.

Practicing continuously since 1979, Dr. Flier has maintained his hospital affiliations with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has maintained an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School, where he is currently Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, and a Senior Fellow of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Society.  During his years on the full-time staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center he held a variety of leadership positions, including Associate Chairman of the Department of Medicine (for community practice development), Chief of the Division of Community Practice, and CEO of the Affiliated Physicians Group.  During that time he developed major interests in practice organization, patient safety and quality improvement through medical informatics. He has lectured nationally on these subjects for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement

Dr. Flier has been honored twice as a Compassionate Caregiver by The Kenneth B. Schwartz Center for his commitment to patient care.  He has been cited as a Top Doctor by Boston Magazine, and has  been included in Best Doctors in America®. He is a member of The American Medical Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society, and a Fellow of  The American College of Physicians.

Dr. Flier is a member of the Board of Trustees of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a member of the Board of Directors of Hebrew Rehabilitation Center.

Dr. Flier lives in Newton, with his wife of over 30 years, Carol Efron-Flier. Carol is a member of the musical theater faculty at the Boston Conservatory. His daughter Dana Flier lives in Newton, and is a nursery school teacher at Bright Horizons. His daughter Emily is a medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine.
